Teams & Coaches

Canuck Stuff Volleyball Club has a long history of developing both great young volleyball players and great young people.

Since 1998 Canuck has had over 3000 male and female athletes play high level volleyball here at the Volleydome. Many have gone on to play at colleges and universities all over North America as well as in Provincial and National team programs. Many of them contributed to the numerous Provincial and National Championship banners that hang in the Volleydome.

A number of factors are responsible for this success, but probably the largest amount of credit should go to the amazing group of coaches and technical resource people that are the backbone of Canuck Stuff. Our current coaching staff has an unprecedented number of former national team and Pro volleyball players, all anxious to pass along their experience and "Love of the Game" to the next generation of hard working athletes. Listed below are the teams and respective Canuck Stuff Coaches for the season.

One of the distinct advantages of a club like Canuck is the high calibre of coaches it attracts because of its history and reputation for developing great athletes, and great young people. We know each team will not only benefit from great coaching but will be exposed to the wealth of knowledge and experience of our Technical Committee consisting of a group or former CIS, National Team and many Pro volleyball players, as they help with the selection process, assist at team practices and offer positional clinics to Canuck athletes throughout the season.

Club Founders and Technical Directors: Don and Mylene Saxton

Don's volleyball career as a player started nearly 40 years ago, when after 2 years of playing Basketball at U of S he saw the light and switched to Volleyball, winning CIAU Gold in 1979. Don went on to play a total of 8 years with Team Canada earning a second place finish at the FISU Games, a third place finish at the Pan Am Games, and a forth place finish at the 1984 Olympics. Don played Pro Volleyball with the Dutch team in 1980, and in Spain from 1989 to 1991. He started the Canuck Stuff Volleyball Club in 1991 as a men's team which won 7 Canadian Championships and 1 USA Open Championship. During the last 15 years he has still enjoyed playing and winning in the masters and seniors categories, earning 4 more World Titles.

Don's coaching career started with a couple of seasons as an apprentice and assistant coach with Team Canada and his first youth club team was a group of 13 year old Bantam boys most of whom had never seen a volleyball before. Since that time Don and Mylene have run programs for players of all ages including the very popular adult co-ed leagues, Volleyball Academy and Dome Club for kids grade 3 to 11, School and Club Tournaments and of course the Canuck Stuff Youth Volleyball Club for male and female players between the ages of 13 and 18. Don was awarded the Tachikara Coach of the Year Award in 2008 after taking a group of U18 girls on an unexpected journey which ended with a Silver medal at the Canadian Open Juvenile Championships. The next season he led a group of U14 guys to a National Championship in Abbotsford and was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame again, this time as the recipient of the Sport Builder Award.

Mylene played at the University of Ottawa where she was awarded the CIAU Most Valuable Player Award in 1980. She played 1 year with the Jr. National Team and then went on to play six years for Team Canada, mostly as a middle blocker.

After moving to Calgary, Mylene taught and coached volleyball at St. Mary's High School. Mylene has developed many great young volleyball players through the Canuck Stuff program winning two Canadian National Championships in 2003 and 2005. Mylene has enjoyed coaching our younger athletes working with the U14 age group and winning back to back provincial championships in 2012 and 2013. Mylene and Don are looking forward to a very successful season as this group of girls round out their Canuck career and their U18 year.

The Saxton's contribution to the game of volleyball can only be described as "immeasurable".

Please take a minute to look over the impressive Bios of the Coaching Staff that call Canuck Stuff and The Volleydome "home".

U18 Men

Coaches : Jace Richards, Derek Meeuwisse, Tyrone Moline & Kent Greves

Jace Richards

We are very pleased to have Jace back home at Canuck where he spent his entire club career (U14 to U18). He is a Physical Education teacher who also teaches Building Construction and French. Jace attended Western Canada High School where his team won the 4A Boys Provincial Championship in 2005. After his high school and club career Jace went on to play post secondary volleyball at Mt. Royal where they won the Provincial and National Championship in 2007. In 2010 Jace joined the University of Calgary Men's team as a Libero and they went on to win the Canada West title as well as a Bronze medal at the CIS Nationals that same year.

Jace has an excellent understanding of the game and was quickly recruited as an assistant coach by Mt. Royal University where he continues in that role. He has also coached with the Volleyball Alberta Provincial Team in 2012 and 2015 as well as being the head coach for the Alberta Winter Games Team in 2015 and 2016. We are thrilled to have Jace back coaching our U18 guys for the 2020/21 season.

Kent Greves

Kent started his college career at Mt Royal College where he was named "All Canadian" in the 1987-1988 season. He went from there directly to the National team and became the starting setter in 3 short years to lead Team Canada in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Head Coach Glenn Hoag had lots to say about Kent Greves at his induction into the Hall of Fame, but the summary of it all was "He is the best setter Canada has ever produced". Kent played 11 seasons of professional volleyball in Europe and in the span of 5 years he led the Paris Volleyball team to an unprecedented 10 major titles. Paul Duerden who has played 15 years with Team Canada and 13 years of Pro volleyball in Europe said "Kent is easily the best setter I have ever played with....The guy is a magician."

Kent's track record coaching here at Canuck is truly amazing when you consider their win/loss record and the look at the caliber of athletes they have developed in their programs!

U15 Boys

Coaches : Dave Jones, Thomas Heinze, Kyle Lee & Shane Kozak

Dave Jones

Dave began his sports career as a multi-sport athlete from a very young age. He started into volleyball as a setter with the Guelph Oaks Sports Club in 1975. He made the Junior National Team as an alternate at 17 years old in 1976 and worked at the volleyball venue during the Montreal Olympics. This experience solidified volleyball as the sport that he would pursue and eventually play competitively for over 30 years. Dave attended subsequent Junior National Team tryouts without being selected as part of those teams. Undeterred, he continued to train hard and was the starting setter for the Ontario Junior Provincial Team that won gold at the 1979 Brandon Winter Games. 1980 was the year Dave tried out for and become part of the Senior Men’s National Volleyball Team that would eventually finish 4th in the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games, Canada’s highest Olympic volleyball finish to date. Dave played on the National Team for over six years and played professionally for 5 years in the French Volleyball League, after which he decided to return to Calgary playing elite club level volleyball in Canada and the USA. In 1997 Canuck Stuff won gold in the Open Division at the US National Volleyball Championships, the first time a non- American team ever won that title.
One of his biggest honours and accomplishments is recently being inducted into the Canadian Volleyball Hall of Fame as part of the 1984 Olympic Team. Dave is excited to become part of the rich history of successful coaches and teams at Canuck Club and looks forward to enriching and inspiring the lives and volleyball journeys of many young athletes.

Shane Kozak

Shane grew up in B.C. where he played 5 years for Team BC and was captain of the 1995 Western Canada Summer Games championship team. While growing up Shane also played for several competitive club teams throughout BC where he twice captained and represented Canada at the US Junior Olympics. Shane also played at the U of C and Mt Royal College. While playing for Mt Royal College during the 1998-1999 season Shane captained the team to a National Championship title and was named to the "All-Canadian Team". Shane has coached the West Ridge School team the previous three seasons, including going undefeated during the 2019 season, and is very excited to be coaching with the competitive Canuck program.

U16 Boys

Coaches : Stefan Filip, Chad Grasza and JP Chieng

Stefan Filip

Stefan’s lifelong passion has been largely centered around volleyball. He started playing at a young age in Europe and grew up playing school and club volleyball in Romania and practicing with a local professional team. He played university ball while completing a Physical Education degree and then went on to spend 9 years playing professional volleyball in Europe, including Sweden and the top league in Italy. Stefan moved to Calgary 6 years ago and started coaching the little kids in the Volleydome Dome Club program and asked them to help him with his English while he helped them with learning volleyball. It was immediately clear how much he enjoyed teaching the game he loves so much. Over the past 6 years Stefan has coached every age group of boys and girls, usually several teams in multiple programs at the same time. He is now working as a fulltime coach with the Volleydome, Jr Canuck and Canuck as well as coaching a One Volleyball Premier League semi pro team called the SVR Stallions.
Stefan’s passion for coaching is obvious as he spends his days developing athletes of all ages in private sessions, positional group sessions, serving and passing clinics or coaching teams in competition. He is a very competitive individual but at the same time he is extremely patient and deliberate in his process. Start young, focus on long term development and help as many kids as possible to learn to play and love the game. “Teach them to play and compete without fear now and they will learn to succeed and win soon enough.”

JP Chieng

JP's passion and enthusiasm for volleyball began at a young age and allowed him to play as a setter with the Canuck Stuff volleyball club. It is a safe bet that you would constantly see him at the Volleydome, encouraging youth (of all ages) to grow their love of the game, and helping them to develop their skillsets to become better players and teammates. He has coached high school teams, summer camps, dome club, private sessions, and will be entering his 4th year coaching with Canuck.

U15 Girls

Coaches : Jolan Storch, Candace Greves, Jason Crellin and Milou Saxton

Jolan Storch

Jolan grew up in Edmonton and played volleyball at Harry Ainlay. In the summers she and Candace trained together as members of Team Alberta. She went to the University of Toronto for 4 years as the starting setter and for 3 out of 4 years was the team captain and academic All-Canadian. She then joined the Canadian indoor national team program for 2 seasons, followed by 2 seasons playing professionally in Division 1 in Switzerland. Jolan capped off her “young” playing career on the beach with 4 years on Canada’s beach national team, with several top 15 finishes. In her “old” playing career, Jolan is a 4-time US Open Volleyball Champion (40’s Division). Jolan started coaching as a University student during her summers and has been a regular coach within various Volleydome programs with each of her children’s teams over the past 6 years. She is known as a very enthusiastic coach who loves to see her athletes succeed. She believes that this will give them the same life-long love of the sport and the many friendships and opportunities it can offer, that she has had the privilege to experience. We are thrilled to Jolan round out this amazing coaching staff!!

Candace Greves

We are very fortunate to have Candace returning for a tenth season as part of our Canuck staff after nine very successful seasons coaching her four son's teams with her husband Kent. Their track record coaching here at Canuck is truly amazing when you consider their win/loss record, the number of Provincial and National Champions they have won and look at the caliber of athletes they have developed in their programs! Candace played in the Alberta club program as well as the Team Alberta representatives to the Canada Games in 1989. She played at the University of Calgary as a power hitter in winning the CIAU Championship in 1989. She and her teammates went on to add another in 1994. Candace was awarded the "Mikasa U16 Coach of the Year" in 2011. where they said "She is truly invested in each athlete and brings out the very best in everyone around her".

Jason Crellin

Jason grew up playing Volleyball in Strathmore under the coaching expertise of Randy Moncks, and went on to play with the University of Calgary Dinos Club Volleyball team, as well as the Alberta Provincial Team. Jason played for 5 years with the University of Calgary Dinos Mens Volleyball Team winning a national Championship in 1993. After university he continued to play with the Mens Canuck Volleyball Club and has been coached with Canuck back in the 1990s. He has had the opportunity to Assistant Coach at the College level both at Mount Royal and SAIT for 4 years, as well as for the Alberta Provincial Team for 3 years, along side current University head coaches Rod Durrant and Dan Ota. He has been teaching with the Rockyview School Division for the last 18 years, coaching both the high boys and girls teams for 16 years. He has seen many players that he has coached move on with successful club, University, National team and Professional careers in Volleyball. He feels that Volleyball is a great life long sport and can teach athletes the importance of hard work, competition, team work, leadership and fairness in all aspects of their lives.

Milou Saxton

Milou, being the first of the four Saxton children, started playing volleyball at the age of 10 and spent 7 years playing with Canuck Stuff club - winning a couple of Provincial Championships and 2 Nationals Championships before going off to Connecticut University for 5 years as a Division 1 setter/rightside in the NCAA and pursuing her interests in graphic design.

Milou’s passion for coaching started when she was about 16 years old running the Volleydome summer camps for kids and sha has been actively coaching ever since. Over the years she has coached all age groups for both guys and girls. Milou has also really enjoyed sharing her experience as a high level setter over the past few years by running setting sessions for our juvenile women’s setters. Add to that her passion for the beach game and the fact that she spends her summers coaching beach volleyball to club athletes as well as on the Provincial Teams, Summer Games teams and most recently the Western Canada Summer Games team.
In her “spare time” she works full time running the Volleydome's Youth programs and somehow still finds time play in the competitive women’s and co-ed leagues. Not sure where she finds the energy, but we are sure grateful for all she brings to our club and the volleyball community in general!! Milou is very excited to return to coaching young girls again with the Canuck U15 program in the upcoming season!

U14 Boys

Coaches : Brian Gullekson, John McDougall and Fauve Welsh

Brian Gullekson

2021 will mark Brian's 22nd season coaching volleyball at Canuck Stuff, although it also marks his 40th year involved in competitive sports as either a coach, official and/or administrator. Brian has spent 13 of the last 22 years coaching Canuck guys club teams but thoroughly enjoyed coaching the U18 girls team this past season. He is a Level 2 NCCP certified coach in both Softball and Volleyball and has completed all the training for his Level 3. Brian is also an Advanced Coach Developer and Evaluator. He spent 16 years officiating Basketball at all levels including community, ACAC, CIAU and the World Basketball League. Brian believes strongly in the lifelong benefits children gain when they participate in competitive sports as witnessed in his own children as well as many others in his years in sports. Over the years Brian's teams have earned several championship banners and many of the athletes he has coached have gone to play at the post secondary, national and professional levels, but his greatest pride is in watching these young athletes grow to become great young men and women several of which have returned to coach at Canuck or the Volleydome.

Fauve Welsh

Fauve played her club volleyball in Calgary and graduated from the Canuck program heading to College of the Rockies to play the 2013/14 season. She returned to Alberta to play at Red Deer College where her team won a National Championship. Fauve also coached both U17 and U14 girls club teams with the Queen’s Volleyball Club during her time in Red Deer. She helped coach the Canuck U14 girl’s program in 2017 before completing a Bachelor of Education at UofA.
